1. What ZOVIRAX is and what it is used for

ZOVIRAX cream is indicated for treatment of skin infections caused by herpes simplex.
ZOVIRAX cream contains the active substance aciclovir, an antiviral agent.
ZOVIRAX cream is used to treat lip sores. Starting the treatment with ZOVIRAX cream early may prevent a sore from becoming visible. If a sore is already visible on the skin, then ZOVIRAX cream can accelerate the healing process.
ZOVIRAX cream may be used for treating recurring sores on facial skin and lips.
A cold sore is the sign of an infection caused by the herpes simplex virus that resides in its inactive state in the nerve cell clusters of lips and the surrounding facial skin. After initial infection, the virus moves into the nerve cell cluster and remains there without causing problems until it is reactivated. The activated virus moves from the cell cluster to the lips and the surrounding skin, causing a clod sore. The virus can be activated by various factors, such as cold, flue, menstruation, exhaustion, emotional stress, injuries, bright sunlight or simply excessive tiredness.
You must talk to a doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after 10 days.

2. What you need to know before you use ZOVIRAX Do not use ZOVIRAX:

- if you are allergic to aciclovir or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
- for treating other skin infections beyond cold sires;
- for treating genital herpes;
- inside the mouth (e.g., for treating mouth sores) or on the nose.

Warnings and precautions

Talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse before using ZOVIRAX cream:
- if your immune system does not function properly (e.g., if you have had a bone marrow transplant or if you have HIV infection);
- if you are not sure whether you have a clod sore or not;
- if the cold sore is very severe;
- if the cold sore does not fully heal in 10 days or worsens.

Avoid contact with eyes.

- If the cream accidentally comes into with eyes, rinse with plenty of warm water. If you have any questions, ask your doctor.
Do not mix ZOVIRAX with other creams or liquids.
Patients with lip sores should be careful to avoid spreading the virus. To avoid transmitting the infection, do not let other people to touch the area of the sore on your skin. Do not share your drinkware or utensils with others. The virus can infect other areas of the body. If you have touched the sore with your hands, do not touch your eyes, because the herpes virus can cause very severe ulcers on the cornea.
If your cold sores heal slowly and recur frequently, talk to your doctor who will give you advice on how to proceed.

Other medicines and ZOVIRAX

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are using or have recently used or might use any other medicines.

3. How to use ZOVIRAX

Always use this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
Apply the cream to the sore 5 times a day after every 4 hours, except during the night.
The treatment period is 4 days, or up to 10 days if necessary.
- Use sufficient cream to cover the entire affected skin area and the outer edges of cold sores (if any). You can start treating cold sores even after a sore has appeared.
- Wash your hands before and after applying the cream to prevent cold sore complications or infecting others.
- If you forget to apply the cream once, use it as soon as possible and continue as usual.
If you have used the cream for 10 days and the sore has not healed or symptoms worsen, tell your doctor.
The best option is to carry the cream with you, so you can start treatment as soon as the symptoms of a lip sore appear. The best results are achieved if you start applying the cream as soon as possible, even before the sore has actually appeared.
Many people feel itching or pricking before the sore becomes visible and if you start applying the cream as soon as you feel this, a visible sore may never appear. However, of a sore does appear, ZOVIRAX cream will accelerate healing.
To prevent worsening or spreading the infection, do not rub the affected areas with a towel.
For external use only.
Accidental use of too much cream or ingestion of the cream is unlikely to cause any adverse effects. If the ingested quantity is very large, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

If you forget to use ZOVIRAX

If you cannot apply the cream to the sore at the correct time, do it as soon as possible and continue the treatment as usual.

4. Possible side effects
