1. WHAT UPSARIN C IS AND WHAT IT IS USED FOR

Upsarin C belongs to the category of medicines that are used to relieve pain and reduce fever. Usparin C contains acetylsalicylic acid and ascorbic acid. It is used to treat pain (such as headache, tooth ache, joint or muscle pain) and/or fever.
You must consult a doctor if you are not feeling better or are feeling worse after 3 days.

2.   WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU TAKE UPSARIN C

Do






not take Upsarin C:

If you are allergic to acetylsalicylic acid, ascorbic acid or any of the other ingredients ofthis medication (listed in section 6);
If you are allergic to a similar medicine, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines; If you have an acute gastric or duodenal ulcer;
If you are past the sixth month of your pregnancy;
If you are breast-feeding;
If you are taking methotrexate (more than 15 mg per week) or a medicine to reduce blood clotting;
If you suffer from a disease that causes haemorrhage or are otherwise at risk of bleeding;
If you have kidney stones (in this case, do not take more than 1 g of ascorbic acid per day).

Warnings and precautions

Consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking Upsarin C.

Children and adolescents

Acetylsalicylic acid is contraindicated for children and adolescents under 16 years of age due to the risk of Reye syndrome. Reye syndrome is rare but very severe side effect (that usually causes neurological disorders and liver damage). It may be associated with the following symptoms: drowsiness, sleepiness, stomach pain, repeated vomiting, aggression, cramps and coma. Contact a doctor immediately if a patient who uses acetylsalicylic acid develops symptoms of mental or behavioural disorders or vomiting.

Take special care with Upsarin C

■   If you suffer from gout;
■   If you have had gastric or duodenal ulcers or bleeding;
■   If you are elderly or have lost a significant volume of liquid (dehydration);
■   If you have kidney or liver problems;
■   If you have bronchial asthma or an allergy (this medicine must not be used in case of asthma or skin rashes, e.g., urticaria, associated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines or acetylsalicylic acid);
■   If you have a lot of blood in your period or you use an intrauterine coil.
Even in small doses, acetylsalicylic acid increases the risk of bleeding. The risk persists for several days after treatment. If you are scheduled for a surgery, tell your doctor, surgeon, anaesthesiologist or dentist that you are taking this medicine.

Other medications and Upsarin C

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are using,have recently used, or are planning to use any other medicines.
This medicine must not be taken with the following medicines, unless advised otherwise by your doctor:
•   other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines
•   heparin
•   ticlopidine
•   medicines to treat gout
•   diabetes medicines
•   glucocorticosteroids
•   diuretics
•   pentoxyfylline
•   clot-dissolving medicines
•   antacids
•   selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (a kind of antidepressants)
•   a-interferon.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding

Sometimes your doctor may recommend using this medicine in the first five months of pregnancy.
This medicine must not be used in or after the sixth month of pregnancy, as it can cause severe side effects for the child, especially on the circulation system and kidneys, even after a single dose. However, in very special cases, a cardiologist or gynaecologist may prescribe very small doses of acetylsalicylic acid, which is not used to treat fever or pain. In such case, you should strictly follow the doctor’s orders.
Acetylsalicylic acid is excreted in breast milk and should not be used while breast-feeding.
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine if you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby.

Driving and operating machinery

Upsarin C has no significant effect on the ability to drive and operate machinery.

Upsarin C contains sodium

One effervescent tablet contains 485 mg (21 mmol) of sodium, which is important for patients who are on a diet with controlled sodium intake.

3. HOW TO TAKE UPSARIN C

Always take this medicine in the way that is described in this leaflet or was explained to you by your doctor or pharmacist. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure of anything.
Fully dissolve the effervescent tablet in a glass of fruit juice, regular or sweetened water and drink straight away. The recommended doses are specified below.
Adults and adolescents 16 years and older
A single dose is 1-2 tablets. If necessary, this dose may be repeated after 4 hours, but not exceeding 9 tablets (3 g of acetylsalicylic acid) per day.
Elderly patients
A single dose is 1-2 tablets. If necessary, this dose may be repeated after 4 hours, but not exceeding 6 tablets (2 g of acetylsalicylic acid) per day.
Regular use helps to prevent recurrence of pain and fluctuations of body temperature. If you have any further questions on the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
The pill is not intended to be split at the groove.

If you take more Upsarin C than you should

In case of overdose or unintentionally taking a too large dose, talk to your doctor immediately or call emergency medical care. The symptoms of overdose of acetylsalicylic acid include ringing in the ears, impaired hearing and headache.

If you forget to take Upsarin C

Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.

4. POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS

Like all medicines, this medicationcan cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
If any of the following symptoms arise, immediately discontinue the treatment and contact your doctor:
■   Allergic reactions, such as rash, urticaria, asthma, anaphylactic reactions;
■   Bleeding (bleeding from the mouth or black stools);
■   Stomach pain, gastric or duodenal ulcer;
■   Ringing in the ears, impaired hearing, headache (these are usually symptoms of overdose).
Large quantities of vitamin C (over 1 g) may promote kidney stones in certain cases and may cause increased haemolysis (rupturing of red blood cells) in persons with G6PD deficiency.

5. HOW TO STORE UPSARIN C

Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children. Do not store above 25°C.
Keep the cylinder tightly closed. Keep away from humidity.
Do not use this medication after the expiry date which is stated on the carton and cylinder after EXP. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
Do not throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to throw away medicines you no longer use. These measures will help protect the environment.

6. CONTENTS OF THE PACK AND OTHER INFORMATION

What

Upsarin C contains

The active substances are acetylsalicylic acid and ascorbic acid. Each tablet contains 330 mg of acetylsalicylic acid and 200 mg of ascorbic acid.
Additional ingredients are: glycerine, anhydrous citric acid, sodium hydrogen carbonate, sodium, benzoate, povidone.
What Upsarin C looks like and contents of the pack A white, round pill with a diameter of 23 mm and a central groove.
Each pack contains 10 or 20 effervescent tablets, either in one or two plastic cylinders.
