1. What Rennie is and what it is used for

Rennie is indicated for the symptomatic treatment of gastric or duodenal ulcers, excess stomach acid and heartburn.
Rennie contains two antacids - calcium carbonate and heavy magnesium carbonate, which have a fast and long-term effect of neutralising excessive stomach acid.

2. What you need to know before you use Rennie

Do not use Rennie chewable tablets:

-   if you have a severe kidney disease or if you have kidney stones;
-   if you have high levels of calcium or low levels of phosphates in the blood;
-   if you are allergic to calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).

Warnings and precautions

As with other antacids, taking these tablets may hide the symptoms of other, more serious conditions.
Talk to your doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after7 days.
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before you start taking Rennie tablets if you have kidney problems.

Other medicines and Rennie

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other
medicines.
•   If you are taking antibiotics (tetracyclines, quinolones), cardiac glycosides (digoxin), levothyroxine (thyroid hormone), eltrombopag (medicine increasing platelet count) or other prescription medicines (e.g. fluorides, phosphates, preparations containing iron), talk to your doctor before taking Rennie, as Rennie may affect these medicines.
•   If you take thiazide diuretics that are used to increase urine output, tell your doctor about taking Rennie tablets beforehand, as the doctor may wish to monitor the calcium levels in your blood.
To maximise the benefits of all medicines, take Rennie tablets 1 to 2 hours after taking any other
medicines.

Rennie with food and drink

As other antacids containing calcium, taking this medicine with large quantities of milk or dairy products should be avoided.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using the medicine if you are pregnant, breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby.
Rennie chewable tablets may be used during pregnancy and breast-feeding but long-term administration of large doses should be avoided. Pregnant women should not exceed the maximum daily dose (see section 3 “How to use Rennie chewable tablets”).

Driving and operating machinery

Rennie has no effect on the ability to drive or operate machinery.

Rennie contains sucrose

One tablet of Rennie contains 475 mg of sucrose. If you have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars or if you have diabetes, talk to your doctor before taking this medicine.

3. How to use Rennie chewable tablets

Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
Adults and children above the age of 12: 1-2 chewable tablets as a single dose, preferably one hour after a meal and before bedtime, as well as in the case of pain during heartburn. Do not take more than 11 tablets within 24 hours.
If complaints persist after 7 days, talk to your doctor to rule out the presence of a more serious disease. Long-term use of this medicine should be avoided.
The medicine must not be given to children under the age of 12.

If you take more Rennie tablets than you should

Do not take any more tablets, drink a lot of water and ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice. Overdose symptoms include nausea and vomiting, constipation, fatigue, an increase in urine output, thirst, dehydration and abnormal muscle weakness.

If you forget to take Rennie chewable tablets

Do not take a double dose if you missed the previous dose.
If you have any further questions about the use of this product, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

4. Possible side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Side effects are unlikely when administering the recommended doses.
In very rare cases, allergic reactions have been reported to ingredients of the medicine, such as rashes, itching, breathing problems, as well as swelling of the face, mouth or throat and anaphylactic shock. If you experience any of these reactions, stop using the medicine and talk to your doctor immediately.
Long-term administration of large doses may increase calcium and magnesium levels in the blood, especially in patients with a kidney disease. This can cause nausea and vomiting, indigestion, diarrhoea, fatigue, muscle weakness, confusion, an increase in urine output, thirst and dehydration.
Long-term administration of Rennie tablets with milk or dairy products may result in the milk-alkali syndrome, which causes high calcium levels in the blood. Symptoms of the milk-alkali syndrome include taste perversion, headache, kidney problems, fatigue and lumps/bumps developing under the skin.

If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse. This includes any possible side effects not listed in this leaflet. You can also report side effects directly via www.ravimiamet.ee. By reporting side effects you can help provide more information on the safety of this medicine.

5. How to store Rennie

Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Do not store at a temperature higher than 25 °C. Store in the original pack, protected from moisture.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the carton and on the blister after the ‘EXP’ mark. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
Do not throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to throw away medicines you no longer use. These measures will help protect the environment.

6. Contents of the pack and other information

What Rennie contains

-   The active substances are calcium carbonate and heavy magnesium carbonate. One chewable tablet contains 680 mg of calcium carbonate (which contains 272 mg of calcium) and 80 mg of heavy magnesium carbonate.
-   The other excipients are sucrose, talc, pregelatinisedmaize starch, potato starch, magnesium stearate, liquid paraffin, peppermint scent and flavouringand lemon scent and flavouring.

What Rennie looks like and contents of the pack

Creamy white coloured concave-faced square-shaped tablets with the scent and taste of peppermint.
Chewable tablets, 24 tablets in a PVC/aluminium blister pack.
