1. What Mikanisal is and what it is used for

The active substance of Mikanisal shampoo is ketoconazole, which is used to treat and prevent fungal infections of the scalp. Ketoconazole works by damaging fungal cell membranes. The medicine acts topically in the surface layer of the scalp and does not penetrate into other parts of the body.
Mikanisal is indicated for flaky skin of the scalp (dandruff) and seborrheic inflammation of the scalp (seborrheic dermatitis).

2. What you need to know before you use Mikanisal Do not use Mikanisal:

-   if you are allergic to ketoconazole or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed
in section 6).

Warnings and precautions

Like with other shampoos, avoid any contact of the shampoo with open wounds and eyes. In case of contact, immediately rinse the wound and eyes thoroughly with plenty of water. Seborrhoea and dandruff, for which Mikanisal shampoo is used, is often associated with hair loss. Hair loss may also occur when using Mikanisal shampoo, although it is uncommon.
Children and adolescents
Use of this medicine is not recommended in children, because there are no adequate data in this age group.

Other medicines and Mikanisal

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are using or have recently used or might use any other medicines.
The shampoo may cause skin irritation (redness and itching of scalp) when used immediately after extended topical administration of corticosteroid treatment. In order to avoid that, gradually discontinue treatment during 2...3 weeks. Mikanisal shampoo can be used 3 weeks after discontinuing local corticosteroid treatment.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
As the active substance of Mikanisal - ketoconazole - is not absorbed when used topically, Mikanisal shampoo can be used during pregnancy and breast-feeding.

3. How to use Mikanisal

Mikanisal is indicated for adolescents and adults.
Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist have told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
For the treatment of seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff use Mikanisal twice a week during 2...4 weeks.
For prevention use once in 1.. .2 weeks.
For one wash take 5...6 mL (1 teaspoonful) of shampoo, dilute it with small quantity of water and carefully massage into scalp and hair. Leave shampoo for 3...5 minutes before rinsing. When rinsing, carefully wash not only hair, but also scalp.
If you feel that the effect of Mikanisal is too strong or too weak, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

If you use more Mikanisal than you should

Overdosing is not likely in the case of topical administration.
Accidental ingestion is generally not dangerous, but it is still recommended to contact your doctor. In order to avoid the entry of shampoo into respiratory tract, do not induce vomiting or perform gastric lavage.
If you have any further questions on the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

4. Possible side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Uncommon (may affect less than 1 in 100 users)

•   change in hair structure

•   redness of skin
•   itching
•   administration site conditions
•   increased tear secretion
•   folliculitis (infection of hair follicle)

•   contact dermatitis
•   skin lesion
•   skin flaking
•   administration site hypersensitivity
•   administration site abscesses
•   impaired taste sensation

•   angioedema (swelling of face and mucous membranes)
•   urticaria
•   discoloration of hair (particularly of chemically damaged or grey hair)

5. How to store Mikanisal

Do not store above 25 °C.
Do not store in refrigerator or freeze.
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the package.
The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
Do not throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste Ask your pharmacist how to throw away medicines you no longer use. These measures will help protect the environment.

6. Contents of the pack and other information

What Mikanisal contains

-   The active substance is ketoconazole. 1 g shampoo contains 20 mg of ketoconazole.
-   The other ingredients are sodium lauryl diethoxy sulfate, disodium laureth sulfosuccinate, cocamide DEA (coconut oil fatty acid diethanolamide), lauryldimonium hydroxypropyl collagen, hydrolysed; PEG-120 methyl glucose dioleate, sodium chloride, sodium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid, concentrated; imidourea, azorubine (E 122), purified water.

What Mikanisal looks like and contents of the pack

Transparent or almost transparent light pink to dark red viscous mass or liquid with specific smell.
Plastic bottle contains 60 g or 100 g of shampoo. Plastic bottle is packaged in a carton.
Not all pack sizes may be marketed.
