1. What Hydrocortisone DAK is and what it is used for
Hydrocortisone DAK is a mild glucocorticosteroid ointment that reduces itching and has an antiinflammatory effect. Indications Short-term treatment of skin irritation or itching. You must talk to a doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after 7 days.
2. What you need to know before you use Hydrocortisone DAK Do not use Hydrocortisone DAK:
- if you are allergic to hydrocortisone or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6); - if you have open wounds or damaged skin; - around the anus and reproductive organs; - in case of skin infections caused by viruses, bacteria, parasites or fungi without any corresponding concomitant treatment; - around the outer ear in case of a suspicion of eardrum perforation; - in case of dermatitis, rosacea or acne around the mouth.
Warnings and precautions
The medicine is for external use only. Use the medicine in the facial area only under a doctor’s prescription; avoid getting the ointment in the eye. Discontinue treatment in case of symptoms of hypersensitivity or local irritation. Similar to all other externally used corticosteroids, care must be exercised in case of using the medicine in the long term and on large areas of skin. The duration of treatment should not exceed 7 days. The following effects are rare, but can still occur in case of topical preparations: - when used under tight clothes or in areas with a predilection for heat rash, topical corticosteroids can cause skin atrophy, manifested as stripes on the skin, skin thinning or the dilation of capillaries (thin blood vessels); - topical use of steroids can exacerbate viral, bacterial or fungal skin infections if no relevant concomitant treatment is implemented. If the infection persists in spite of the treatment, using hydrocortisone ointment should be discontinued; - wounds may take significantly longer to heal. Talk to your doctor if you experience blurred vision or any other vision problems. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Hydrocortisone DAK.
Children
Only use in children under 2 years of age when prescribed by a doctor. Use of topical hydrocortisone in children should be avoided if possible. Only use the minimum therapeutic amount and do not use for longer than 7 days. The systemic absorption of the medicine is increased in children and they are more susceptible to systemic effects due to larger body area to body mass ratio. It is not recommended to use the medicine in facial area for extended period as it might cause cataract and glaucoma (due to increase in intraocular pressure).
Other medicines and Hydrocortisone DAK
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines.
Pregnancy, breast-feeding and fertility
It is not recommended to use topical hydrocortisone during pregnancy. If you become pregnant or suspect that you might be pregnant, stop the treatment and talk to a doctor. Data on the excretion of topically administered corticosteroids into breast milk is insufficient. The risk to the new-born/babies cannot be ruled out. Treatment with hydrocortisone on large skin areas and its application under airtight bandages should be avoided during the lactation period. The medicine should not be used on the breasts (to avoid the baby coming into contact with the ointment). If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
3. How to use Hydrocortisone DAK
Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. The ointment is applied on the afflicted area of skin in a thin layer 1-3 times per day. The amount of ointment depends on the size of the afflicted area to be treated. After achieving clinical effect, the frequency of application can be gradually decreased to the minimal frequency while still controlling the symptoms. The duration of treatment is individual, but should not exceed 6 weeks, if the patient is not under regular medical supervision. If the treatment causes skin irritation, stop using the medicine. Patients with liver damage Patients with liver function disorders have an increased risk of side effects (see section 4) if the systemic absorption through the skin is increased (see section 2 “Do not use Hydrocortisone DAK” and “Warnings and precautions”). Patients with kidney damage No dosage adjustment is necessary in patients with renal failure.
Use in children
Only use in children under 2 years of age when prescribed by a doctor. There is a risk of inhibited growth in children, even in case of topical use. Children can be more susceptible to systemic side effects than adults due to their larger body surface to body mass ratio. The duration of the treatment should be as short as possible and not longer than 7 days. Elderly Elderly people can be more susceptible to systemic side effects due to tender and fragile skin. If you have any further questions on the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Instructions for use
Only use the ointment on afflicted areas of skin; avoid applying the ointment on undamaged areas. Wash your hands after applying the ointment, except if the ointment is used for the treatment of hands. Long-term treatment is not recommended without a doctor’s prescription. If you have any further questions on the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
4. Possible side effects

Infants, children and elderly have a higher risk of side effects. Side effects are classified according to their frequency using the following system: very common (> 1/10), common (> 1 to < 1/10), uncommon (> 1,000 to < 1/100), rare (> 1/10,000 to <1/1,000), very rare (< 1/10,000), unknown (cannot be estimated from the available data).
