1. What Elevit Pronatal is and what it is used for

Elevit Pronatal is a multivitamin, minerals and trace elements preparation.
Elevit Pronatal is indicated in the prevention or correction of disorders due to a vitamin or mineral imbalance or deficient diet during pregnancy and lactation.
Vitamins, minerals and trace elements are essential nutrients. They cannot be produced by the body and therefore must be derived from diet. These substances are vital for daily living (e.g. breathing, digestion, generation of energy, function of brain and nervous system, reproduction, growth), while at the same time forming part of numerous tissues and organs.
Pregnant and breast-feeding women need significantly more vitamins, minerals and trace elements than non-pregnant women. Particularly, a pregnant woman must provide nourishment not only for her own body but also for that of her child.
With a balanced diet and without the consumption of nicotine and alcohol, pregnant and breastfeeding women normally have enough vitamins, minerals and trace elements. Nevertheless, deficiencies may occur during pregnancy and lactation. Throwing up frequently during the early stage of pregnancy may be a reason for a deficiency of essential nutrients.
The consequences of deficiencies can include anaemia and tiredness for the mother, and retarded growth and changes in skin and mucous membranes for the child.
Elevit Pronatal contains all essential nutrients required during pregnancy and breast-feeding. Thus the occurrence of deficiency in mother and child is prevented. Folic acid helps to prevent malformations of the child.

2. What you need to know before you take Elevit Pronatal Do not take Elevit Pronatal, if you are/have

• allergic to any of the ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6)
too high blood levels of vitamin A and/or D

Very high doses of some Elevit Pronatal ingredients, in particular, vitamin A, vitamin D, iron and copper, can be harmful. Patients using other vitamin preparations or those under medical care should consult a healthcare professional before taking Elevit Pronatal.
Particular caution is required with any other products, including supplements and/or fortified foods/drinks containing vitamin A, beta-carotene or vitamin D. Please note: Elevit Pronatal must not be used if you have too high levels of vitamin A or D, or when using vitamin A supplements. See under “Do not take Elevit Pronatal”.

Elevit Pronatal with food and drink

Oxalic acid, found in spinach and rhubarb, and phytic acid, found in whole cereals, may inhibit calcium absorption. Avoid intake of Elevit Pronatal within two hours of eating vast amounts of these foods.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding

Elevit Pronatal is especially formulated for pregnant and breast-feeding women. However the recommended dosage should not be exceeded.
Vitamin A doses over 10,000 international units (IU) daily may cause deformities in the unborn child if administered during the first three months of pregnancy. Therefore, consider information provided under “Warnings and precautions”.
Permanent overdose of vitamin D might be harmful to the foetus and newborns. The vitamins and minerals in the preparation are excreted into breast milk. This must be taken into consideration if the infant is receiving any respective supplements.
For pregnant and breast-feeding women, 4,000 IU vitamin D daily is considered as safe. Elevit Pronatal contains 500 IU per tablet.
