1.   What Otrivin Menthol is and what it is used for

Otrivin Menthol 0.1% provides nasal congestion relief and quick opening of a stuffed nose. In addition to the decongestant it contains aromatic menthol and eucalyptol vapours. It is used in adults and adolescents above 12 years of age.
Otrivin contains the active substance xylometasoline. It opens the stuffy nose quickly, helps to remove excessive mucus and allows breathing more freely.
Otrivin Menthol is indicated for reducing the swelling of the nasal mucous membrane associated with rhinitis.
Otrivin Menthol takes effect in 2 minutes and the effect lasts for up to 12 hours.
Otrivin Menthol is generally well tolerable, also for patients with sensitive nasal mucosa.
Laboratory analyses have shown that xylometasoline reduces the activity of cold-related rhinoviruses.
It does not contain preservatives, thereby reducing the risk of developing allergy and irritation.

2.   What you need to know before you use Otrivin Menthol Do not use Otrivin Menthol

•   if you are allergic to xylometasoline or any other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6.1),
•   if you have recently had endonasal surgery (brain surgery performed through the nose or mouth),
•   if you suffer from narrow-angle glaucoma (increased intraocular pressure),
•   if you suffer from chronic rhinitis and dry nasal cavity (Rhinitis sicca or atrophic rhinitis).
If anything of the above applies to you, inform your doctor, since Otrivin Menthol is not suitable for you in these circumstances.

Warnings and precautions

Before using Otrivin Menthol talk to your doctor or your pharmacist, if you have:
•   elevated blood pressure,
•   cardiac diseases,
•   an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism),
•   diabetes,
•   enlarged prostate (prostate hyperthrophy),
•   benign tumour of adrenalin and noradrenalin producing adrenal glands (pheochromocytoma),
•   if you use or have used within the last 2 weeks antidepressants known as MAO inhibitors.
If anything of the above applies to you, do not use Otrivin Menthol before you have consulted your doctor or pharmacist.
Like other medicines enhancing the air passage through nose, Otrivin Menthol may also cause sleeping disorders, dizziness and tremors in highly sensitive patients. Consult your doctor if you get concerned about these described symptoms.
Like other medicines reducing the swelling of nasal mucosa, Otrivin Menthol should not be used for longer than 7 consecutive days. Contact your doctor if the symptoms remain. Using the medicine for too long or too large quantities may cause the re-emergence of the nasal congestion or worsening of the symptoms.
Do not administer Otrivin in mouth or eyes.
Do not exceed the permitted dosage, especially in children or elderly.


Otrivin Menthol 0.1% should not be used in children under 12 years of age.

Other medicines and Otrivin Menthol

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are using, have recently used or might use any other medicines. Do not use Otrivin Menthol if you are concurrently using certain antidepressants: These drugs are:
-   monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI): do not use Otrivin if you take or have taken MAO inhibitors within the last 14 days;
-   tricyclic or tetracyclic antidepressants.
If you use any of these medicines, consult your doctor before using Otrivin Menthol.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding

Do not use Otrivin Menthol 0.1% during pregnancy. If you are breast-feeding, Otrivin 0.1% may only be used with a doctor’s advice. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

Driving and using machines

Otrivin Menthol 0.1% has no considerable effect on the ability to drive or use machines.

3. How to use Otrivin Menthol

Use Otrivin Menthol as recommended below. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
Otrivin Menthol should not be used in children under 12 years of age.
Adults and adolescents above 12 years of age
1 spray with the metered dose spray in each nostril up to three times daily, as necessary. Do not administer more than three doses to each nostril per day.

1. Do not cut the nozzle. Prime the metered dose spray before use.
2.   Blow your nose.
3.   Remove the plastic cap.
4.   Before the first application, prime the pump by pumping 4 times until an even mist appears. For subsequent applications, the metered dose spray is instantly ready for use. Should the spray not be fully pushed down during the administration or if the product has not been used for longer than 6 days, the pump will need to be re-primed with 4 pumps.Avoid spraying in the eyes or mouth.
5.   Hold the bottle in an upward position, placing your thumb on the bottom of the bottle and the nozzle between the two fingers.

Lean slightly forward and insert the tip into one nostril.
Spray and breathe in gently through the nose at the same time.
Repeat this procedure with the other nostril.
Clean and dry the nozzle and put the cap on immediately after administration of the medicine. To prevent possible spread of infection, the spray should only be used by one person.

If you take more Otrivin Menthol than you should:

If you have used more Otrivin Menthol 0.1% than you should or accidentally swallowed the medicine, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

If you forget to use Otrivin Menthol

Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.

4. Possible side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Stop using Otrivin Menthol and seek medical help immediately if any of the following symptoms occur, for these may be signs of an allergic reaction:
-   Difficulty breathing or swallowing
-   Facial, labial, lingual or pharyngeal oedema
-   Severe itching with red papular skin rash.
Common side effects (may affect 1 to 10 people in 100):
Irritation or dryness of nasal mucosa, dizziness, headache, local burning sensation.
Very rare side effects (may affect up to 1 person in 10,000):
Allergic reactions (skin rash, itching), blurred vision, cardiac arrhythmias or increased pulse rate.

5. How to store Otrivin Menthol

Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Store below 25°C.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the carton and the bottle after {date DD.MM.YYYY}. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
Do not throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to throw away medicines you no longer use. These measures will help to protect the environment.

6. Contents of the pack and other information What Otrivin Menthol contains

Otrivin Menthol 0.1% contains 1 mg/ml xylometasoline as the active substance.
List of excipients: levomenthol, eucalyptol, disodium edetate, sodium hydrogen phosphate dihydrate, disodium phosphate dodecahydrate, sodium chloride, sorbitol, macrogolglycerol hydroxystearate, purified water.

What Otrivin Menthol looks like and contents of the pack

0.1% metered-dose spray is clear to transparent, colourless to whitish solution with menthol and eucalyptus odour in a spray bottle that ensures the correct dosing. Package size is 10 ml.
