1. What Bepanthen Plus cream is and what it is used for
The active substances in Bepanthen Plus are dexpanthenol, which is transformed into pantothenic acid in cells and functions as vitamin B5, and chlorhexidine, a well-tolerated bactericidal antiseptic agent. Bepanthen Plus cream is used for the disinfection and treatment of superficial skin infections or skin damage in the following situations: • superficial injuries causing a risk of infections: cuts, blisters, scratches, skin fissures, skin wounds, follow-up treatment of mild burns, dermatitis; • cracked nipples in breast-feeding mothers.
2. What you need to know before you use Bepanthen Plus cream Do not use Bepanthen Plus
- - if you are allergic to dexpanthenol, chlorhexidine, or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6); - if you have severe, deep, or severely contaminated wounds; - if you have a perforated ear drum. Medicines containing chlorhexidine should not be applied to perforated ear drums.
Warnings and precautions
Avoid getting the cream in the eye, ear canal, and on mucous membranes. Bepanthen Plus should not be used to treat wounds or skin irritations (e.g. sunburn) with no risk of infection. In such cases, it is recommended to use dexpanthenol cream, which is rapidly absorbing and easy to apply thanks to its aqueous formulation. The cream is also suitable for the treatment of oozing wounds, hairy skin surfaces, and exposed body parts (such as the face, elbows, and palms). For providing a protective layer (e.g. treating diaper rash in babies or cracked nipples in breast-feeding mothers) or treating very dry skin, it is recommended to use the dexpanthenol ointment with a high fat content. If the symptoms persist or your condition worsens, talk to a doctor.
Other medicines and Bepanthen Plus
Chlorhexidine is incompatible with soaps and other anionic substances. To prevent potential interactions (antagonism or inactivation), Bepanthen Plus cream should not be used with other antiseptic agents. Due to the formation of sparingly soluble salts, chlorhexidine is not suitable for use with borates, bicarbonates, carbonates, chlorides, citrates, phosphates, and sulfates.
Pregnancy and breast-feeding
Using the cream on large areas of skin should be avoided during pregnancy. Breast-feeding mothers are allowed to use Bepanthen Plus cream, but the application of thick layers and use on large areas of skin should be avoided. If the medicine is used for treating cracked nipples during breast-feeding, the cream must be washed off the nipples before nursing. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using the medicine.
Bepanthen Plus contains lanolin
that can cause local skin reactions (e.g. contact dermatitis).
3. How to use Bepanthen Plus cream
Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. Bepanthen Plus cream is applied in a thin layer on cleaned wounds or inflamed skin one or several times per day until the wound is healed. Application of the cream on large areas of skin should be avoided. The wound can be covered with a bandage, but this is not mandatory. As Bepanthen Plus is meant for short-term use, you should talk to your doctor if your condition worsens and/or healing slows down.
4. Possible side effects
