2. What you need to know before you take Nitroglycerin Nycomed Do not take Nitroglycerin Nycomed:

Warnings and precautions
- if you have glaucoma, as the use of nitrates may increase intraocular pressure; - if you have severe renal impairment; - if you have decreased function of the thyroid gland (hypothyroidism). Nitroglycerin Nycomed may cause a drop in blood pressure even in the case of small doses. Therefore, it is advisable to sit or lie down after taking the tablet to avoid potential fainting. When using nitrates, you may develop tolerance (gradual decrease in the effect of the medicine) to their effect. To avoid this, use as small a dose of nitrates as possible and try to keep a 10-12-hour interval between administration times. Using the smallest possible dose, keeping an interval between administration times or intermittent treatment with other medicines that dilate coronary arteries help decrease the risk of tolerance. Angina treatment with nitrates should be stopped by gradual reduction of doses in order to prevent withdrawal symptoms. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Nitroglycerin Nycomed.
Other medicines and Nitroglycerin Nycomed
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines. Take special care when using Nitroglycerin Nycomed: - if you are using medicines with vasodilatory effect or medicines which lower blood pressure. These medicines may increase the blood-pressure-lowering effect of glyceryl trinitrate. - if you are using sildenafil (e.g. Viagra), vardenafil (e.g. Levitra) or tadalafil (e.g. Cialis) (medicines used in the case of erectile dysfunction), as they may cause a significant drop in blood pressure along with a risk of severe side effects, such as fainting and myocardial infarction. Concomitant use of glyceryl trinitrate with sildenafil, vardenafil and tadalafil is contraindicated. - if you are using medicines that cause dryness of the mouth as a side effect (e.g. tricyclic antidepressants). These medicines may reduce the effectiveness of glyceryl trinitrate sublingual tablets, as they may dissolve slower as a result. - if you are using acetylsalicylic acid, as it may strengthen the effect of glyceryl trinitrate; - if you are using heparin (anticoagulant). Glyceryl trinitrate may reduce the anticoagulant effect of heparin. - if you are using dihydroergotamine (DHE), as it poses a risk of DHE poisoning (peripheral tissue oxygen deficiency, abnormal sensation, nausea and vomiting); - if you are using alteplase (a blood-clot dissolving medicine), as it may cause rapid breakdown of alteplase in the body. As a result, alteplase may not be as effective in dissolving blood clots.
Nitroglycerin Nycomed with food and drink
Concomitant use of alcohol may cause a significant drop in blood pressure and collapse.
Pregnancy, breast-feeding and fertility

One 0.5 mg tablet is placed under the tongue or cheek pocket (between the cheek and gum) when first symptoms of angina occur or before an activity or load that may induce angina. If necessary, repeat the dose in 5 minutes. If the pain persists after taking three tablets within 15 minutes, talk to your doctor. Sit or lie down after taking the tablet in order to prevent potential fainting. The effect occurs 1-3 minutes after sublingual administration. The effect lasts for 30-60 minutes.
Use in children
Nitroglycerin Nycomed may not be used in children younger than 15 years without a doctor’s prescription. Elderly Elderly patients may be more sensitive to the blood-pressure-lowering effect of nitrates. In addition, the elderly are more likely to suffer from age-related loss of renal function; therefore, special care must be taken when administering nitrates to the elderly. If you feel that the effect of Nitroglycerin Nycomed is too strong or too weak, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
If you take more Nitroglycerin Nycomed than you should
If you take more tablets than you should or if a child has accidentally ingested the medicine, immediately talk to your doctor or the emergency department of the nearest hospital. Overdose symptoms of glyceryl trinitrate include a drop in blood pressure, rapid heart beat, warm and red skin, headache, balance disorders, heart palpitations, visual disturbances, dizziness, fainting, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, shortness of breath and shallow breathing, slow heart rate, confusion, moderate fever, paralysis, elevated intracranial pressure with confusion and neurological withdrawal symptoms. Overdose treatment in the case of ingesting nitrates is symptomatic and supportive. Induce vomiting or carry out a gastric lavage and administer active charcoal. Low blood pressure and tachycardia may be treated by lifting legs higher than the head. Adrenalin is generally not effective in the treatment of a severe drop in blood pressure caused by a glyceryl trinitrate overdose.
