Terbinafine hydrochloride

Read all of this leaflet carefully before you start using this medicine because it contains important information for you.

Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you.
-   Keep this leaflet. You may need to read it again.
-   Ask your pharmacist if you need more information or advice.
-   If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. This includes any possible side
effects not listed in this leaflet. See aection 4.
-   You must talk to a doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse.

What is in this leaflet

1.   What Terbital is and what it is used for
2.   What you need to know before you use Terbital
3.   How to use Terbital
4.   Possible side effects
5.   How to store Terbital
6.   Contents of the pack and other information

1. What Terbital is and what it is used for

Terbital cream is an anti-fungal medicine for local use. Terbital cream is used to treat fungal foot infections (tineapedis), which are sensitive to terbinafine.

2. What you need to know before you use Terbital

Do not use Terbital:

-   if you are allergic to terbinafine hydrochloride or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).

Warnings and precautions

-   For external use only.
-   Avoid contact of the cream with your eyes. If the cream gets into the eyes accidentally, wipe it off and rinse the eyes thoroughly with clean water.
-   Avoid accidental ingestion of the cream (see the section What to do in case of accidental ingestion of Terbital cream?).

Children

The use of this cream is not recommended for children under 12 years (except when
recommended by a doctor).

Other medicines and Terbital

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are using or have recently used or might use any other medicines.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
Due to the lack of clinical experience, Terbital cream may be used during pregnancy only in exceptional cases when the benefits of treatment outweigh any potential risks to the foetus. Terbinafine passes into breast milk, but any effects on an infant are unlikely due to limited absorption of the active substance in case of local use. Nevertheless, Terbital cream may be used during breast-feeding only if the benefits of treatment outweigh the risks to the infant. Do not apply the medicine on your breasts during breast-feeding.

Driving and using machines

There is no need to avoid driving or use of moving mechanisms.

Terbital contains cetostearyl alcohol

Cetostearyl alcohol may cause local skin reactions (e.g. contact dermatitis).

3. How to use Terbital

Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
Adults
Use Terbital cream once or twice a day.
Treatment lasts for 2 to 4 weeks if used once a day.
If used twice a day, a treatment period of one week is often sufficient.
•   When using for the first time, open the tube by reversing the cap and pressing it against the foil at the tip of the tube.
•   Wash and dry the skin thoroughly before applying the cream on the affected skin and surrounding areas.
•   Apply a sufficient amount of cream in a thin layer on the affected skin and surrounding areas.
•   Rub the cream into the skin and make sure to treat the surrounding areas in addition to the affected skin.
•   Wash your hands thoroughly after treatment to prevent the medicine from coming into contact with undesirable areas and to avoid contaminating other persons or other parts of the body with fungal spores.
Continue using the cream for the recommended period even if symptoms seem to disappear after a couple of days. This prevents recurrence of the condition and promotes successful treatment.
Terbital cream should lead to a visible improvement in a few days. However, complete healing of damaged skin can take longer, even up to 4 weeks, depending on severity. The effects of Terbital cream and the healing of the skin will continue after the end of the use period.
If there are no signs of improvement after 2 weeks of treatment, consult a doctor.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment for elderly patients is not required.
Promotion of healing.
Healing can be promoted by maintaining cleanliness of the treated skin area through regular washing. Dry the skin carefully without rubbing. Try not to scratch the affected area, despite itching, because it would increase skin damage and slow down the healing process or cause contamination. Use a separate towel to avoid infecting other persons. Exchange linen frequently to prevent re-infection. Wash your hands thoroughly after using the cream.

What to do in case of accidental ingestion of Terbital cream?

Ingesting the cream is not life-threatening in most cases. However, if you or someone else accidentally swallowed the cream, it is advisable to contact a doctor. Accidental ingestion of the cream can cause nausea, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, diarrhoea and headache.

If you forget to use Terbital

If you forget to apply the cream, use it as soon as possible, and then continue treatment as usual. If it is time for the next application, use the prescribed amount of the cream, and then continue treatment as usual. Do not use a double dose and do not apply the medicine more frequently than twice a day. It is important to adhere to the prescribed periods of application, because omission of applications can increase the risk of re-infection.

If you stop using Terbital

The symptoms can reappear if you do not use the cream on a regular basis or end your treatment too early.
If you have any further questions on the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

4. Possible side effects

Like all medicines, Terbital can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Rare (may affect up to 1 in 1,000people):
•   hypersensitivity reactions (strong itching, rash, pimples or pustules).
If you experience these symptoms, stop using the cream and contact your doctor.
•   redness in the application area, itching and burning sensation (usually no need to stop the treatment).
