1. What Broncophen is and what it is used for

Broncophen is a traditional herbal product which indication is based on long-term use experience. Soothes pharyngeal irritation and is an expectorant for cough with concomitant upper airway viral infection.

2. What you need to know before you use Broncophen Do not use Broncophen

If you are allergic to the active ingredients or any plants from the Lamiaceae family or any other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6),

Warnings and precautions

If you have fever, dyspnoea and/or pus in sputum, you should contact your doctor.
Broncophen syrup should not be used by patients with alcohol dependency. In breast-feeding mothers, children and high-risk groups (i.e. liver disease or epilepsy) caution is necessary.

Children

It is not recommended to use the medicine in children under 2 years due to lack of data and it is necessary to consult with a doctor.

Other medicines and Broncophen

Tell your pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines.

Broncophen with food and drink

There are no study data on the effect of food and drink on the effect of the medicine.

Pregnancy, breast-feeding and fertility

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
It is not recommended to use the medicine during lactation and pregnancy because it contains alcohol, and due to lack of data.

Driving and using machines

The effects on ability to drive or use machines have not been evaluated.

Broncophen contains saccharose.

Information for diabetics: 5 mL (one dose) contains 1.75 g of saccharose that equals approximately 0.15 bread units. This must be taken into account in diabetic patients.

Broncophen contains alcohol.

This pharmaceutical contains 285 mg of ethanol per each 5 mL. In adults and adolescents at least 12 years old a single dose contains alcohol that equals 13.36 mL of beer or 5.98 mL of wine. In children aged 4.. .12 a single dose contains alcohol that equals 7.18 mL of beer or 2.99 mL of wine (See Special precautions with Broncophen)

Broncophen contains methyl parahydroxybensoate and propyl parahydroxybensoate.

Broncophen contains preservatives methyl parahydroxybensoate and propyl parahydroxybensoate. These may cause allergic reactions that may present as delayed-type reactions.

3. How to take Broncophen

Always take this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.

The recommended dose is:

Adults/adolescents (12 years and older):
10 mL every 3 hours up to 6 times daily; daily maximum dosage is up to 60 mL.
Children (4-12 years):
5 mL every 3 hours up to 6 times daily; daily maximum dosage is up to 30 mL.
Children under 4 years:
The medicine is not recommended for use in children under 4 years due to lack of data and it is necessary to consult a doctor.
Mode of administration:
Oral use.
Take Broncophen without dilution using the provided measurement cup that is marked with 2.5 to 20 ml.
If necessary, it is allowed to take Broncophen diluted with water or warm tea.
Treatment duration:
Treatment with Broncophen must be limited to 5 days. If no improvement occurs during this time you should turn to your doctor, because your disease may be more severe.

If you take more Broncophen than you should

If you take substantially more of the medicine than recommended you may experience the known side effects more severely. In these cases, a doctor should be informed. If necessary a doctor will decide which measures should be undertaken.

If you forget to use Broncophen

Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.

If you stop using Broncophen

If you have any further questions on the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

4. Possible side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Hypersensitivity reactions and gastrointestinal disorders have been reported with medicine containing common thyme. Their frequency is not known.

5. How to store Broncophen

Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Store in original package protected from light.
No special storing conditions are required.
After use, close the bottle tightly. Shelf life after the first opening of bottle is 4 weeks.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the label and carton. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
Do not throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to throw away medicines you no longer use. These measures will help protect the environment.

6. Contents of the pack and other information

What Broncophen contains:

-   The active substances are:
1 mL of syrup contains:
154 mg of common thyme dry extract (1:2-2.5)
Extractive agent: ammonia solution 10% (m/m)/85% glycerol (w/w)/ethanol 90% (v/v)/water (1/20/70/109)
132 mg of marshmallow root liquid extract (1:20)
Extractive agent: water
-   The other ingredients are:
Concentrated raspberry juice, ascorbic acid, sucrose, methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E218), propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E216), ethanol, purified water.

What Broncophen looks like and contents of the pack

Broncophen is a brownish-red viscous fluid with the taste and smell of common thyme and raspberry for oral use.
The syrup is packed into a 150 mL amber-yellow glass bottle with a tumable protective plastic cap. Packed into carton packaging. The pack contains a measurement cap a scale of 2.5 mL to 20 mL that enables to measure the exact required amount.
Natural-ingredient containing medical products like Broncophen sine may turn flaky; also the medicine may precipitate or attach to the inside of the turnable cap. This does not affect the quality of effect of the medicine.
