5 How to store Braunol 75 mg/g cutaneous solution 6. Contents of the pack and other information

1. What Braunol 75 mg/g cutaneous solution is and what it is used for

Braunol 75 mg/g cutaneous solution is polyvidon iodide-containing antiseptic and disinfectant.
How to use Braunol 75 mg/g cutaneous solution:
Once: antiseptics of skin and mucous membranes before a medical procedure.
Repeated, limited use: treatment of infected skin lesions (pressure ulcers, tibial ulcers, superficial ulcers and burns, infected dermatoses).

2. What you need to know before you use Braunol 75 mg/g cutaneous solution Do not use Braunol 75 mg/g cutaneous solution

-   if you are allergic to polyvidon iodide or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
-   if you have hyperthyroidism or any other thyroid disease;
-   if you have a rare skin disease dermatitis herpetiformis;
-   if you will undergo or have undergone radiotherapy with iodine (until the end of treatment).

Warnings and precautions

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Braunol 75 mg/g cutaneous solution.
-   In preoperative skin disinfection it should be taken care of that the product does not accumulate under the patient, because it may cause skin irritation.
-   If you have thyroid enlargement or a period after a thyroid disease, you may not use Braunol 75 mg/g cutaneous solution for a longer term and in large areas (e.g. more than 10% of total body area and longer than 14 days). In these cases you should be tested 3 months after the end of treatment to find early symptoms of thyroid disease and if necessary, monitor thyroid function.
-   If you are receiving concomitant lithium treatment, you should avoid regular use of Braunol 75 mg/g cutaneous solution (see Using with other medicines)
Effects on diagnostic tests:
-   Due to the oxidising effect of polyvidone iodide some diagnostic tests may give false-positive results (e.g. O-toluidine or guajaqi wax in determination of haemoglobin or glucose).
-   Use of polyvidone iodide may decrease the adsorption of iodine by the thyroid gland. Use of Braunol 75 mg/g cutaneous solution may interfere with thyroid investigations (scintigraphy, determination of plasma protein-bound iodine, diagnostics with radioactive iodine) and it may make treatment with radioactive iodine impossible. A new scintigraphy may be performed 1-2 weeks after the end of treatment with polyvidone iodine.

Children

In neonates and infants up to 6 months Braunol 75 mg/g cutaneous solution may only be used with doctor’ s recommendation and its use must be limited. After using Braunol 75 mg/g cutaneous solution a functional thyroid investigation is necessary. Caution must be exercised to avoid any accidental oral ingestion of Braunol 75 mg/g cutaneous solution by infants.

Elderly patients

Elderly patients have an elevated risk for later development of hyperthyroidism due to iodine after treatment and these patients should receive a recommendation from a doctor before using Braunol 75 mg/g cutaneous solution Elderly patients with thyroid enlargement and functional thyroidism predisposition may use Braunol 75 mg/g cutaneous solution for a longer term and large areas only with a doctor’ s recommendation. If necessary, monitoring of thyroid function should be performed.

Other medicines and Braunol 75 mg/g cutaneous solution

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines.
It may be presumed that polyvinyl iodide, the active ingredient of use Braunol 75 mg/g cutaneous solution will react with proteins and other organic compounds, such as components of blood or pus that may reduce its activity.
If Braunol 75 mg/g cutaneous solution is used concomitantly with enzymatic wound medicines, the effects of both medicine may be decreased due to oxidation of the enzyme component. The reciprocal weakening may also be evident if silver, hydrogen peroxide or taurolidine-containing disinfectants are used.
Braunol 75 mg/g cutaneous solution may not be used concomitantly or soon after using wound medicines or disinfectants that contain silver, because silver and iodine form a substance that causes acid burns.
Patients treated concomitantly with lithium should avoid the use Braunol 75 mg/g cutaneous solution , especially if the treated area is large. Adsorbed iodine may cause hyperthyroidism possibly caused by lithium.

Pregnancy, breast-feeding and fertility

Before using Braunol 75 mg/g cutaneous solution during pregnancy and breast-feeding, consult your doctor or pharmacist and consider that the use of the medicine must be maximumly limited. After the use of Braunol 75 mg/g cutaneous solution it is necessary to perform functional thyroid investigation on the child. All preventive measures must be implemented to avoid accidental ingestion of Braunol 75 mg/g cutaneous solution by the infant during breast-feeding from the mother’ s skin.

3.
Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as a doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
