Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you.
-   Keep this leaflet. You may need to read it again.

-   If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. This includes any possible side effects not listed in this leaflet. See section 4.

1. What COLDREX is and what it is used for

COLDREX tablets provide short-term relief to complaints accompanying the flu and the cold. Such complaints include headache, chills, muscle and joint pain, swollen nasal mucous membranes, sinus pain and painful swallowing.
COLDREX tablets contain paracetamol, an analgesic and antipyretic agent; phenylephrine hydrochloride, an agent reducing the swelling of nasal mucous membranes and sinus inflammation and facilitating breathing; caffeine, a mild stimulant; terpin hydrate, an expectorant; and ascorbic acid (vitamin C) that helps restore vitamin C levels that have decreased in the early stages of viral diseases and cold.
You must talk to a doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after 3 days.

2. What you need to know before you use COLDREX Do not use COLDREX:

•   if you are allergic to paracetamol, caffeine, phenylephrine, terpin hydrate, ascorbic acid or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
•   if you are using or have within the past two weeks used antidepressants known as monamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors;
•   if you are using other decongestants (medicines relieving nasal congestion) or cold medicines, appetite suppressants or stimulants;
•   if you have hypertension, a cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, closed-angle glaucoma, pheochromocytoma, severe liver or kidney damage;
•   if you are using tricyclic antidepressants;
•   if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.

Warnings and precautions

Do not use this medicine concomitantly with other medicines containing paracetamol or medicines used for relieving the symptoms of the common cold and the flu and nasal congestion.
Taking too much paracetamol may cause severe liver damage.
Do not take this medicine if you are taking another prescription or over-the-counter medicine containing paracetamol for pain, fever, a cold, the flu or sleep disorders.
This medicine contains caffeine. Avoid excessive caffeine use (e.g. coffee, tea and certain canned drinks) when using this medicine.
Always follow the marking on the label.
Talk to your doctor before taking COLDREX if:
-   you have a liver or kidney disorder;
-   you are underweight or malnourished;
-   you drink alcohol regularly.
You should discontinue using this medicine or take smaller doses of paracetamol.
Talk to a doctor, pharmacist or a nurse before using COLDREX if:
•   you have a benign prostate tumour;
•   you have a vascular disease (such as Raynaud’s syndrome);
•   you are using other medicines (see below);
•   you have asthma and you are hypersensitive to acetylsalicylic acid;
•   you have the rare hereditary glucose-6-phosphodehydrogenase deficiency that can cause red blood cell (erythrocyte) diseases;
•   you have abnormal breakdown of red blood cells (haemolytic anaemia);
•   you have a long-term nutritional disorder;
•   you have suffered from fluid loss and become dehydrated due to vomiting, diarrhoea, excessive sweating etc.;
•   you are dependent on alcohol or a chronic alcoholic - a different dosage is recommended for you;
•   you have a serious infection that may increase the risk of metabolic acidosis.
Symptoms of metabolic acidosis are as follows:
-   deep, rapid, laboured breathing;
-   feeling unwell (nausea), feeling sick (vomiting);
-   loss of appetite.
If a combination of these symptoms occur, talk to your doctor immediately.

Children:

Do not give this medicine to children under the age of 12.

Other medicines and COLDREX

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any of the following medicines:
•   if you are using a medicine containing paracetamol;
•   if you are using warfarin or other blood thinners;
•   if you are using beta-blockers (medicines for heart disease and hypertension);
•   if you are using tricyclic antidepressants (e.g. amitriptyline) or if you are using or have within the past two weeks used antidepressants known as monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors;
•   if you are using cardiac medicines (e.g. digoxin);
•   if you are using metoclopramide or domperidone (medicines for the treatment of nausea and vomiting);
•   if you are using cholestyramine for reducing blood cholesterol levels;
•   if you are using medicines affecting the liver, such as phenytoin, phenobarbital, carbamazepine, rifampicin, isoniazid, St John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum).
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have recently taken any medicines, especially any of the above.
Do not use alcohol while using this medicine.

Pregnancy, breast-feeding and fertility

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
This medicine should not be used during pregnancy and breast-feeding.

Driving and using machines

This medicine can cause drowsiness and dizziness. If this is the case, do not drive or use machines. Coldrex contains the colouring agent sunset yellow
Coldrex contains the colouring agent sunset yellow (E110) that can cause allergic reactions.

3. How to use COLDREX

Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
Always use the lowest dose that relieves your symptoms.

Adults and adolescents over 16 years of age:

1-2 tablets every 4-6 hours as necessary.
Do not take more than 8 tablets every 24 hours.

Adolescents aged 12-16 weighing 43-54 kg:

1 tablet every 4-6 hours as necessary. Do not take more than 6 tablets every 24 hours.
Do not use for more than 3 days without talking to a doctor. Do not give this medicine to children under the age of 12.
Do not exceed the prescribed dose and do not take more frequently than every 4 hours.
If the symptoms persist, ask your doctor for advice and stop using COLDREX.
If you feel that the effect of COLDREX is too strong or too weak, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

If you take more COLDREX than you should

A paracetamol overdose can cause liver damage. In case of an overdose, immediately talk to a doctor even if you have no symptoms.

If you forget to use COLDREX

Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.

If you stop using COLDREX

If you have any further questions on the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Possible side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
The use of this medicine can cause headache, drowsiness, anxiety, irritability, restlessness, agitation, sleep problems, elevated blood pressure, blood chemistry changes, liver function disorders, nausea and vomiting.

Immediately stop taking the medicine and talk to your doctor:

-   if you develop an allergic reaction, such as rash or pruritus that can occasionally be accompanied by breathing problems or swollen lips, tongue, face or throat.
-   if you develop a rash or peeling skin or mouth ulcers. Severe skin reactions have been reported in very rare cases;
-   if you have previously developed respiratory problems when using acetylsalicylic acid or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and these problems also appear when using this medicine;
-   if you develop haematomas or bleeding for an unknown reason;
-   if you develop loss of vision that could be caused by excessively high intraocular pressure. This is very rare and is more likely to occur in people with a glaucoma;
-   if you have an unusually fast heart rate or if you think that your heart rate has become accelerated or irregular;
-   if you have urination problems. This is more likely to occur in men with an enlarged prostate. All these reactions are rare.

5. How to store COLDREX

Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Do not store at a temperature higher than 25 °C.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the carton. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
Do not throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to throw away medicines you no longer use. These measures will help protect the environment.

6. Contents of the pack and other information What COLDREX contains

-   The active ingredients are: paracetamol, caffeine, phenylephrine hydrochloride, terpin hydrate and ascorbic acid.
One tablet contains: 500 mg of paracetamol, 25 mg of caffeine, 5 mg of phenylephrine hydrochloride, 20 mg of terpin hydrate, 30 mg of ascorbic acid.
-   The other excipients are: soluble starch, corn starch, talc, stearic acid, polyvidone, potassium sorbate, sodium lauryl sulfate and the colouring agent sunset yellow (E110).

What COLDREX looks like and contents of the pack

Capsule-shaped tablet, one half white, the other half orange, the orange half bears the embossed marking “COLDREX”.
The pack contains 12 or 24 tablets. Not all pack sizes may be marketed.
