1. What Maalox is and what it is used for
Maalox is a balanced combination of magnesium and aluminium hydroxide (as an algeldrate), which has a potent ability to neutralise acids and a protective effect on the oesophageal, gastric and duodenal mucous membranes. Maalox alleviates pain caused by increased acidity in the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract for several hours. Maalox is indicated for the symptomatic treatment of heartburn and the gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (rise of gastric content in the oesophagus) in adults and adolescents from the age of 15.
2. What you need to know before you use Maalox Do not take Maalox
- if you are allergic to aluminium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide or any of the other ingredients of this medicine; - if you have acute renal impairment.
Warnings and precautions
- if you have lost weight, - if you have swallowing difficulty or a persistent stomach pain; - if this is your first episode of a gastrointestinal disease or if its nature has changed lately; - if you have renal failure.
Children
Use of magnesium hydroxide may cause hypermagnesemia in small children, especially in the presence of kidney damage or dehydration. Talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse before using Maalox:
Other medicines and Maalox
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines. Magnesium hydroxide may affect the action of certain other medicines and other medicines may affect the action of magnesium hydroxide. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are already taking the following medicine: - salicylates Antacids (medicines that reduce the acidity of gastric content) should not be taken concomitantly with other medicines. As a precaution, it is advisable to take antacids 2 hours before or after taking other medicines. Maalox contains antacids (aluminium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide). As some other medicines also contain antacids, you should not take antacids concomitantly with other medicines to prevent an overdose. The quantity of ingested aluminium hydroxide should be considered in dialysis patients with a chronic kidney disease or in the case of long-term treatment with Maalox. If symptoms persist or worsen after a 10-day treatment, do not increase the dose. Ask a doctor or pharmacist for advice.
Pregnancy, breast-feeding and fertility
During pregnancy, this medicine may be used under a doctor’s permission only. Breast-feeding may be continued during treatment with this medicine.
Driving and using machines
Maalox has no influence on the ability to drive and use machines.
Maalox contains sorbitol and maltitol
Maalox oral suspension contains sorbitol as an excipient. Maalox sugar-free chewable tablets contain sorbitol and maltitol as excipients. If you have been told by your doctor that you have intolerance to some sugars, talk to your doctor before taking this medicine. Maalox sugar-free chewable tablets are suitable for diabetics.
3. How to use Maalox
Maalox is intended for adults and adolescents from the age of 15. Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
Maalox oral suspension:
Oral suspension as single doses of 4.3 mL: 1-2 sachets to treat heartburn and food reflux. Do not take more than 12 sachets a day. Before use, mix the suspension carefully by rubbing the sachet between your fingers. Swallow the sachet without diluting. Oral suspension in a bottle: 1 tablespoon (15 mL) to treat heartburn and food reflux. Do not take more than 6 tablespoons a day. Shake the bottle well before use!
Maalox chewable tablets:
Suck or chew 1-2 tablets to treat heartburn and food reflux. A maximum of 6 times a day, but no more than 12 tablets a day. Do not use on more than 10 consecutive days. If you feel that the effect of Maalox is too strong or too weak, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
If you take more Maalox than you should
Excessive use of the medicine may cause diarrhoea or constipation. Aluminium hydroxide may cause constipation and overdose of magnesium salts may cause the intestinal activity to slow down.
If you forget to take Maalox
Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose. If you have any further questions on the use of this product, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
4. Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Incidence is classified as follows: Very common > 10% Common > 1 and < 10% Uncommon > 0.1% and < 1% Rare > 0.01 and < 0.1% Very rare < 0.01% Unknown (cannot be estimated from available data). In recommended doses, side effects are uncommon. Immune system disorders Unknown: hypersensitivity reactions, such as itching, hives, angioedema and anaphylactic reactions. Gastrointestinal disorders Uncommon: diarrhoea or constipation. Unknown: stomach ache Metabolism and nutritional disorders Very rare: hypermagnesemia, which has been observed with prolonged use of magnesium hydroxide in patients with kidney damage. Unknown: hyperaluminemia, hypophosphataemia. Excessive use of the medicine may cause diarrhoea or constipation.

5. How to store Maalox
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children. Oral suspension as single doses in sachets and chewable tablets (sugar free): This medicine does not require any special storage conditions. Oral suspension in a plastic bottle: do not store at a temperature higher than 25 °C. After the initial opening, the suspension is suitable for 6 months. Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the package. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month. Do not throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to throw away medicines you no longer use. These measures will help protect the environment.
6. Contents of the pack and other information What bottled Maalox oral suspension contains:
- The active substances are magnesium hydroxide and aluminium hydroxide (as an algeldrate). 15 mL or 1 tablespoon of suspension contains 600 mg of magnesium hydroxide and 525 mg of aluminium hydroxide. - The other ingredients are concentrated hydrochloric acid, citric acid, D-mannitol, essential peppermint oil, domiphen bromide, sodium saccharin, sorbitol (non-crystallised) and purified water. What Maalox oral suspension as single doses in 4.3 mL sachets contains: - The active substances are magnesium hydroxide and aluminium hydroxide. 1 sachet (4.3 mL) contains 400 mg of magnesium hydroxide and 460 mg of aluminium hydroxide (equals 230 mg of aluminium oxide). - The other ingredients are 64% sucrose solution, sorbitol solution (non-crystallised), xanthan gum, guar gum, sodium chloride, lemon flavouring (lemon oil, alpha-tocopherol, vitamin E, lemon oil terpene, lime oil, orange oil, coconut oil and citral).
What Maalox chewable tablets (sugar free) contain:
- The active substances are magnesium hydroxide and aluminium hydroxide. 1 chewable tablet contains 400 mg of magnesium hydroxide and 400 mg of aluminium hydroxide (equals 200 mg of aluminium oxide). - The other ingredients are sorbitol solution (non-crystallised), maltitol, glycerol (85%), sodium saccharin, lemon flavouring (acacia, lemon flavouring, butylated hydroxyanisole (E320) and purified water), talc and magnesium stearate.

Maalox is a medicine for alleviating stomach pain. Heartburn and food reflux may be induced by changes in the diet (sour or spicy food, alcohol, etc.), as well as by some medicines (acetylsalicylic acid, anti-inflammatory drugs, etc.). Ask a doctor for advice, if necessary.
